Sweet or savory? That’s the question I ponder every morning right after I get my coffee fix. If the answer is sweet, I often go for a smoothie and this Easy Strawberry Banana Smoothie has been a recent favorite!

It’s creamy, refreshing, and so simple!

I think this is such a fun breakfast or post-workout drink (with or without protein powder). My kids really enjoy a glass as an after school snack. And of course I love that it’s made with ingredients that will fuel their bodies well and without any added sugar.

Plus it’s so versatile!

For this recipe you’ll need (full list of ingredients and instructions are in the recipe card below):

  • Frozen strawberries
  • Banana
  • Milk
  • Honey

Can you use fresh strawberries?

I recommend using frozen strawberries because it results in that perfectly thick smoothie texture. If you’re desperate to make this using fresh strawberries you can do that and add ice. Just know that the texture will ultimately be a little icy and won’t be quite the same.

What milk is best in this smoothie?

You want to use a milk with minimal flavor. If you’re not dairy free, cow’s milk works great. 2%, 1%, and skim are all good options. If dairy free, I recommend unsweetened almond or oat milk.

Can you add protein powder?

Yes! You can add 1 to 2 tablespoons of your favorite protein powder. I recommend a vanilla flavored one so it doesn’t detract from the flavors of the smoothie.

What are other ways to customize this smoothie?

  • Ground flax and chia seeds would be powerful additions to this Easy Strawberry Banana Smoothie if you’re looking to amp up the nutritional value. Both give you extra fiber and omega 3 fatty acids!
  • If you want to incorporate another fruit, try using 1 cup frozen strawberries and 1 cup frozen raspberries. You’ll still get that perfect pink in your finished smoothie plus that tasty raspberry flavor!

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 cup milk of choice
  • 1 tbsp honey, can omit

  • Add all ingredients to a high speed blender. Blend until smooth.


For a thicker smoothie (or a smoothie bowl), use more frozen strawberries.
For a thinner smoothie, add extra milk or coconut water.
