These chicken wings get crispy in the oven and are then tossed in a mildly sweet barbecue sauce. They’re so very yummy! Plus they’re dairy free, gluten free, and Whole30!

I’m bringing you a brand new wing recipe just in time for the Super Bowl! This is the first year we’re planning to watch from home. Usually we get a babysitter and go to a friend’s house. My son is especially excited that we’ll be watching together and of course he wants wings. That guy never tires of them! Maybe it’s a ten year old boy thing.

These wings are tasty thanks to three things:

  1. That dry rub, baby! You’ll love all the spices we’re using to really make these wings flavorful.
  2. They’re crispy, crispy, crispy! I’m a big advocate for crispy wings and a firm believer that you don’t need to fry them. Scroll on down for my tips to achieving perfectly crispy baked wings. So, yes they’re baked. And also, yes they’re crispy.
  3. That homemade barbecue sauce! This sauce is E A S Y. You only need a few ingredients!

For this recipe you’ll need (full list of ingredients and instructions are in the recipe card below):

  • Chicken wingettes, wings, or split wings
  • A few seasonings
  • Ketchup
  • Coconut aminos
  • Apple cider vinegar

What kind of wings to use

Next time you’re in the grocery store grab a pack of chicken wings and a pack of chicken wingettes and hold them side by side. Chicken wings are quite large! So when you see chicken wings at a restaurant what you’re really getting is actually wingettes or split wings. They’re cut smaller and easier to eat so I prefer using those.

Are these wings spicy?

No. The sauce is mild with a hint of sweetness so they can be enjoyed by the whole family including anyone who is heat averse.

Are these Baked Barbecue Chicken Wings Whole30 compliant?

Yes. Just check the label on your ketchup to make sure it’s allowed on Whole30. Many ketchup brands include sugar. Here are a few brands that offer compliant ketchup at the time of this recipe posting.

How to get wings crispy in the oven

Anyone who says baked wings can’t be crispy isn’t do it right! Here are the five simple things you need to do for that crispy skin.

  • Pat your wings dry with a paper towel.
  • Don’t add any sauce until the end.
  • Spread the chicken wings on an oven safe wire rack over a baking sheet. I use the cooling rack that’s for cookies. Really. You don’t want your wings touching the bottom of the pan so this keeps them elevated.
  • Bake at high heat. I do my wings at 450 degrees.
  • Flip the wings at around the halfway point so both the top and the bottom get crispy.
