Wondering what to make tonight? Quickly throw together this hearty one pot meal of turkey and potatoes! Serve over roasted veggies, traditional rice, or cauliflower rice for a healthy and satisfying dinner.

This Ground Turkey & Potato Skillet was loosely inspired by a classic picadillo. It has very different flavors – a picadillo includes olives and raisins. That’s not going to fly with my children. Or my husband, if I’m being honest. But I wanted to take that general idea and make it family friendly with very simple ingredients. We all need hobbies and that’s mine.

This meal is an accurate reflection of my favorite kind of meal to make at home. It may not be the prettiest, but it’s tasty. The addition of potatoes keeps it hearty. And it’s just so easy! This is exactly the sort of comfort food I need in my life right now. How about you?

To create this meal, you’ll start by seasoning and browning the ground turkey. Set aside. (Of course you can easily use a lean ground beef if that’s what you have on hand or prefer.)

Then the potatoes go in the pan to get a little color. Now incorporate the turkey, garlic, tomato sauce, water, and more seasonings. Reduce the heat, cover, and let it all simmer until your potatoes are tender.

It’s next to impossible to screw this up. It’s just that easy!

What potatoes are best to use?

I prefer yellow or gold potatoes. But russet, sweet, or red would all work beautifully too!

How to serve this skillet meal?

Oh there are so many ways to serve up this easy meal. You can clearly enjoy it as is and itโ€™s just perfect. Flavorful. Healthy. Satiating thanks to those potatoes.

But perhaps you want to add something to stretch this dish a bit further? I know I always like something green on our plates! Pile this delicious combo of turkey and potatoes over roasted veggies like my Spicy Roasted Broccoli or Easy Roasted Broccoli (if you don’t like heat). That will give you an added boost of vegetables! This is also crazy delicious over traditional or cauliflower rice!

Other veggies that work beautifully either layered under or just served beside this skillet meal are Garlic Green Beans, Simple Sautรฉed Cabbage, or Roasted Green Beans with Almonds.

Want to add a salad to your meal? My Blueberry Citrus Salad or my Berry Avocado Salad have a hint of sweetness which will balance out the strong flavor of this popular dish!

No matter how you choose to serve this, youโ€™re going to love it. This recipe earns rave reviews on Instagram for good reason!

Instructions

  • Add your ground turkey (or beef) to a skillet on the stovetop.ย Use your spatula to crumble the meat. Cook on medium high, stirring occasionally, until browned. Stir in salt, pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, and oregano. Remove from pan and set aside.
  • Add the oil to the skillet. Once the oil is hot, add the diced potatoes.ย Sautรฉ on medium high heat, stirring occasionally until sides of potatoes have browned. This can take 5 to 10 minutes depending on your stove and the size of your potatoes.
  • Reduce heat to medium. Add your cooked ground turkey, tomato sauce, water, minced garlic, oregano, basil, parsley, salt, pepper, and onion powder to the skillet with potatoes. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes, or until potatoes are tender.
  • Taste and add more salt or pepper if desired.
  • Serve over roasted vegetables (I recommend my Spicy Roasted Broccoli or Easy Roasted Broccoli), traditional rice, or cauliflower rice.

This skillet meal was delicious! I served it over your roasted broccoli as you suggested which was a lovely addition. The potatoes needed a bit more time ( my electric stove heat is inconsistent ๐Ÿ˜ฉ) but they turned out almost creamy and the texture was perfect against the ground turkey and crunchy roasted broccoli. I could totally see the turkey potato combo going well with a fried egg on top or maybe even wrapped in a tortilla with scrambled eggs and hot sauceโ€ฆthatโ€™s if we hadnโ€™t eaten the whole skillet!! Simple, well seasoned and delicious!!

Hello – is the nutrition for the entire dish or one serving? ย And if serving what is the serving?

    1. Christina says:

Hi! Nutrition information is for one serving (assuming you divide the dish into 4 servings).

  3. Jess Coplans says:

Yummy! My husband and I enjoyed it. This made enough for two people. I appreciated all the spices, but it wasnโ€™t too much once completed. I made some cauliflower rice, (who actually likes cauliflower?) and placed this meal right over it and didnโ€™t notice the fart smelling vegetable! Thank you for clear instructions and a tasty recipe.

    1. Christina says:

This was amazing! We added olives to it and made it even better. I tried again with fry seasoning and added Asiago to the mix and worked in some fresh pesto Oh My Goodness was that good. I might omit the potatoes and use the mix and stuff shells next time. Only labor intensive part of this is peeling and dicing potatoes.

    1. Christina says:

Your additions sound so yummy! Happy you enjoyed!

  6. Monique from Michigan says:

This is delicious. Made it for the first time today and the family loved it. I was looking for something different to do with the ground turkey I bought on sale. Happened to have all the other ingredients and ta-da! Thank you.ย

  7. Kristine Spencer says:

    Dry and over spiced!ย

    1. Christina says:

It’s definitely got some spice! Shouldn’t be dry though so I’d suggest making sure you don’t reduce the liquid too much. Hope you find another recipe you enjoy more.

  8. Toni says:

Wasnโ€™t sure what we were having for dinner tonight but had all the ingredients for this. I added some cauliflower rice to it but no other changes. Great flavor!ย

  9. Cindy says:

My husband liked this but definitely had to cook the potatoes longer than suggested and I cut them small. Also added more sauce because otherwise it would have been too dry.

ABSOLUTELY MY FAVOURITE MEAL! So easy and tasty!!!
